Rolling Hills Middle School

Los Gatos, CA

Project Overview

Solar-ready GEN7 is energy-efficient now, energy-independent later.

To meet the challenge of building a new facility in just a year, CUSD opted for modular construction, partnering with AMS to fast-track a two-story classroom building that can be upgraded to achieve the District’s goal of Zero Net Energy. The modern L-shaped building is healthy and energy-efficient, with oversize windows and glass doors that maximize daylighting and high-efficiency HVAC systems that circulate filtered air throughout two levels of adaptable space—both critical to a ZNE strategy. GEN7’s Exterior Corridor design optimizes student flow, offering convenient access to classrooms and the adjoining courtyard. The bump-out elevator tower was moved from the front of the building to the rear exterior wall, creating a sleeker façade.

  • Solar-ready design is pre-engineered to support future PV panels
  • Covered pedestrian walkways provide shading and weather protection
  • Custom architectural elements add color and character to front façade

Project Overview

Creative design makes makerspaces a focal point for learning.

Campbell School of Innovation’s creative culture is the foundation of the school’s new campus—an innovative design that connects student-centered learning suites with makerspaces designed for exploration and discovery. AMS created age-appropriate layouts for each grade, with TK/K classrooms opening into dedicated makerspaces and 1st and 2nd grade classrooms feeding into a central makerspace hub—all designed to support a variety of activities in a cost-effective footprint. Large whiteboards give students space to share ideas and projects, individually or in teams. The buildings are stylish and eco-friendly, with tile-accented stucco façades and glass sliders that fill learning spaces with natural light, fresh air and courtyard views.

  • Glass NanaWalls transition classrooms, makerspaces and outdoor areas
  • Durable, easy-care surfaces allow students to create and experiment
  • ZNE-ready design is engineered for the future addition of solar panels

Project Overview

State-of-the-art STEM space makes Dartmouth a cool school.

The Union School District wanted a leading-edge STEM building that could serve as both a teaching tool for DMS students and a prototype for other schools interested in developing a STEM program. AMS created an innovative, energy-efficient building that organically connects function and design through the creative use of sustainable materials and “cool” technology like movable walls, interactive whiteboards and a video green room. Free-flowing spaces are connected by sliding glass NanaWalls that transition indoor and outdoor learning areas, while providing natural light and ventilation—key to healthy learning and GEN7’s energy-saving strategies. Concrete floors are ideal for robotics and student experiments in a hands-on lab environment.

  • Open flex-space reconfigures for diverse learning and club activities
  • Technology-enabled infrastructure allows multi-device data sharing
  • Collaborative areas encourage interactive, project-based learning

Project Overview

A new campus remarks a 1940s-era school for 21st century learning.

Bishop Elementary School needed a makeover to provide a healthy, high-tech environment for modern learners. Given a clean slate, AMS created a new campus with a space-efficient mix of single- and two-story buildings that open to outdoor learning and play areas. Adjoining GEN7 two-story buildings are the centerpiece, offering both open and controlled access in classroom wings connected by a central clock tower—a site-built element that honors the region’s California Mission heritage. Large low-E windows and Solatubes make classrooms completely daylit, filled with clean, filtered air circulated by high-efficiency HVAC systems. Connectivity for multiple digital devices provides critical support for the District’s 1:1 technology initiative.

  • Bishop is Sunnyvale’s first two-story classroom building
  • Mixing building sizes and styles optimizes space on a tight site
  • Site-built stair overhangs and clock tower personalize the aesthetic
