Escuela Popular Family Learning Center

San Jose, CA

Project Overview

Bilingual learning center showcases a close-knit community’s cultural pride.

Escuela Popular wanted to unite three separate academies on one campus designed for the entire family. AMS created a unique family learning community, connecting two new GEN7 two-story PK-8 buildings with a site-built sky bridge, then adding a single-story AMS FORM building with learning/lab space for high school courses. Flexible classrooms open to a courtyard and adjacent play area, providing indoor/outdoor space for the educational, vocational and childcare needs of multiple generations. Warm earth tones and custom tilework visually connect buildings, celebrating the Hispanic heritage of the bilingual community. Large low-E windows, Solatubes and continuous ventilation fill classrooms with natural light and fresh air for healthy learning.

  • Two-story building houses classrooms, offices, media center and library
  • Open classrooms adapt for career prep, job training and adult education
  • Sustainable design incorporates technology for 21st century learning
